Glenbrook South High School

17 restaurants in Glen Town Center

March 3, 2017 by Margaret Ludemann

He couldn’t believe it.  Really, he couldn’t.

My family is hosting a Japanese exchange student for the next eight days.  He will be attending Glenbrook South, the incredible high school serving Glenview.  We picked him up yesterday and drove him to our home in The Glen, the North Shore’s premier lifestyle community.

After getting him settled in my husband, son and I took him out to dinner.  Of course he doesn’t know the restaurants in the area so we walked him down Tower Drive which is the main restaurant and shopping area in Glen Town Center.  There are 17 restaurants in this two block area, so he had quite a selection to choose from.  I’m not making that up.  It’s a half block from my front door to Tower Drive, and by walking for 5 minutes he had a choice of restaurants serving Italian, Greek, Irish, Thai, Japanese, Mexican and traditional American fare.  He couldn’t believe the number of restaurants and the variety of food all within a brief stroll.  I couldn’t understand what he was saying, but I could tell that he was amazed.

“Sato” chose Yardhouse, a great place with a large menu.  We thought he might choose Ra Sushi Bar & Restaurant, but he was in the mood for an American hamburger.  When his meal was served his eyes got really big because of the size of his burger.  He even took a picture of it to send back home.

After dinner we drove him around The Glen, and he got to see our many luxury homes…single family homes, townhomes, row homes, duplexes, two-flats.  These wonderful homes along with the upscale shopping and terrific Glen restaurants are what set The Glen apart.

If you may be interested in living in The Glen, give me a call.  I am an award winning Realtor and a long-time resident.

The Glen, a great place for families with kids

September 26, 2016 by Margaret Ludemann

When my family moved to The Glen (in Glenview Illinois) in 2003, our son had just turned three years old. My husband and I were attracted to its stunning homes, beautiful neighborhoods, and the ‘urban living in the suburbs’ character that it is known for today. And one more thing, the Glenview’s award winning schools.

After living here only a short period, we also learned that it’s a great place for families with children. Not just because of the schools, but also for the wonderful neighborhoods and the great variety of things available to our son. He is now fifteen and a sophomore at Glenbrook South High School. He has had an active childhood, and so much of that has been due to the vast array of places and activities in The Glen.

As a small child he played in Battery Park…soccer, fishing, flying kites, and just running around. Little Bear Garden, Little Gym, and Kohl Children’s Museum were favorites as well. He did pre-school, classes in pottery and acting, basketball, and swimming in the Park Center.

When he got a little older, he attended Attea Middle School, one of the finest of its kind anywhere; it’s just a short walk from anywhere in The Glen. And at about this age he started “hanging out” in Glen Town Center, The Glen’s “main street”, where he could meet friends in a wholesome environment with tons of things to do and places to go. I’ve lost count of how many movies he’s seen with his buddies at Arclight Theater in GTC; and before or after he would join them for a mac and cheese at Noodles and ice cream at Ben and Jerry’s afterward.

There are some newer fun things for kids to do in Glen Town Center, too, such as Pinot’s Palette, FlavorPot Cooking School, and Funtopia (an indoor climbing and play area).

So, if you’re looking for a place to live and raise your children, take a look at The Glen. We have single family homes, townhouses, row homes, two-flats, duplexes and condos. Prices range from the $300’s to over $2 million. I am an award winning Realtor and a Glen expert. Give me a call at 847-401-1802, and I’ll tell you all about it. Alternatively, I can be reached by email at margaretludemann@gmail.com.

Glenbrook South High School #1 in USA for extracurricular activities

March 24, 2016 by Margaret Ludemann

I’m turning over this week’s Glen blog to an article about Glenbrook South’s ranking as the best public high school in the country for extracurricular activities.  That’s #1 out of 26,407.  Imagine that!!! GBS is the high school serving The Glen and much of greater Glenview, Illinois. The Glen is an upscale residential and retail development in Glenview with over 1,000 luxury homes. I am a long time homeowner in The Glen, and an award winning Realtor. Plus, I am a proud parent of a GBS freshman! So, here is part of the article and a link to the full piece.

Niche, an organization that reviews K-12 public schools, recently ranked GBS number one of all public high schools in the nation when it comes to extracurricular activities, which includes clubs, organizations and athletic teams.

Niche.com publishes results for a variety of rankings of schools periodically throughout the year. Information is gathered to determine rankings by compiling data, which is collected and monitored by the U.S. Department of Education.

According to Jessica Hair, Niche’s marketing outreach coordinator, the data for ranking the best extracurricular activities come from reviews from students and parents in addition to school reports about items such as expenses per student, the number of sports and the percentage of female and male athletes.

“Right now [GBS has] the best extracurriculars in the nation; however, [GBS] also stands out across the board,” Hair said. “[GBS is] the number six [all-around] public school in Illinois, [and GBS is] the number 32 public school in America.”

This was written by Karina Benson, Yoon Kim, and Chaerim Park, and here is the link to the full article.  You may have to copy/paste to get the article.

Listing your home for buyers with children

March 21, 2016 by Margaret Ludemann

In areas which cater to families with school age children, it’s important to time the listing of your home appropriately. The basic rule is that you need to get it on the market in time for buyers to close, get moved, and settle in prior to the start of the school year. Often sellers list their homes too late, and they miss the real estate market for buyers with kids.

Let’s take The Glen as an example. The Glen is an upscale housing and retail development on the former grounds of Naval Air Station Glenview in Glenview Illinois. It is home to a couple of thousand luxury homes of various types, including single family homes, townhomes, row homes, duplexes, condos, and two-flats. Prices in the Glen range from the high $300,000s to over $2 million.

Children in the Glen attend District 34 elementary and middle schools, including Westbrook Elementary School, Glen Grove Elementary School, and Attea Middle School. For high school they attend Glenbrook South High School in District 225. Naturally, there are wonderful private schools available in the area as well, but for purposes of this exercise let’s look at the public school calendar. From there, we will work backward to determine the best time to list your home.

The first day of District 34 schools for next school year will be August 23; for District 225, it will be August 25. If we assume a family would like to get their kids settled in their new neighborhoods to make friends two or three weeks before school starts, we’re looking at a move-in date of around the first of August. Prior to moving in, we can assume a time on market of a month or two…so to be safe, let’s say two months. After the agreement is signed, there is usually a 45 to 60 day period before closing. So, doing the math we find that getting a home on the market would be best to occur by early-April.

This means that home sellers in the Glen who wish to attract families with children should be moving rather rapidly to get their home ready to be listed. You need to find your Realtor and get your home prepared for showing. There’s really not a lot of time to spare.

I am an award-winning realtor who lives in and sells extensively in The Glen. If you are interested in selling, buying or renting in the Glen (or greater Glenview), please contact me right away.

Great schools serve children living in The Glen

August 17, 2015 by Margaret Ludemann

A dozen years ago my family and I were moving back to the Chicago area after living in Boston for a few years. We began our home search in downtown Chicago where we had previously lived. But the more we thought about it the more our focus turned to school quality, and that led us to The Glen in the near-by north shore community of Glenview.

We have been thrilled with the schools here. Our son recently graduated from Attea Middle School located in The Glen, and one week from today he’ll start high school at Glenbrook South. GBS, as it’s known, is one of the highest ranked high schools in the country. Academics are strong, and the offerings go well beyond the normal curriculum one finds in most high schools. For instance the foreign language program offers courses in five languages. Five! French, Spanish, German, Japanese, and Mandarin Chinese. Oh, and American Sign Language. I guess that makes six languages. My son will be taking Japanese, and he can’t wait. Many of his friends will also participate in the Glenbrook Academy of International Studies in English, Social Studies, and World Languages. And the results? Well, 95% of graduates go on to college; the average ACT score is 25; and 89% of students earn AP scores to qualify for college credit.

The GBS experience, though, goes well beyond the classroom. There are 48 clubs at GBS. My son will be joining the fencing club and a few others. Yes, there is a fencing club. Imagine that. And it gets even better. If a student wants a club that doesn’t yet exist, he or she is encouraged to start one. In addition to clubs, GBS offers 8 boys sports and 14 girls sports. There is something for everyone in this outstanding high school.

So, if you are thinking about a move, you should take a long look at The Glen. Homes of all kinds are available including single family homes, condos, townhomes, row homes, duplexes, and two-flats. Home prices range from the $300’s to over $2 million. If you would like to know more about The Glen, the schools, and homes currently listed for sale, please give me a call at 847-401-1802.
