Glenview’s Wagner Farm hosts Farmers Markets Through October

September 25, 2018 by Margaret Ludemann

Wagner Farm’s Farmers Market in Glenview Illinois is a special treat for residents of The Glen.  Not only can we purchase wonderful, fresh food, but it provides us with an opportunity to mingle with neighbors and catch up on our families and activities.

It’s just a short drive from The Glen to Wagner Farm.  It is one of the few remaining farms in north suburban Cook County.  The Wagner family worked and lived on the farm until 1997 when the Glenview Park District purchased it for the benefit of Glenview and area residents.   It is preserved as a working farm to allow children to learn about farming and animals.  The district tells us that Wagner Farm is “where education meets history”.

There are many special events at Wagner Farm including picnics, barn dances, build-your-own scarecrow, a harvest bonfire, hayrack rides, and ice cream socials.  My family and I have taken advantage of many of these since we purchased our Glen townhome in the Tower Crossing neighborhood in 2003.  Our favorite activity, though, is the Wagner Farm Farmers Market which runs each Saturday morning from 8 a.m. to noon, mid-June through October.  The last one scheduled for this year is on October 27th.   In addition to the many booths and tables of farmers and local artisans, a musical artist or group performs; and local chefs perform cooking demonstrations using food from the market.  “The Green Table” is staffed by experts who provide education about sustainable living.

Wagner Farm is located at 1510 Wagner Road in Glenview, and parking is available across the street at Saints Peter and Paul Church.

Glenview’s Park District has so much for so many

July 28, 2014 by Margaret Ludemann

“Check your mailbox. The park district catalog is out today.” So said my neighbor when I ran into her this morning. For those who haven’t a clue what I’m writing about, here’s the deal. The Glenview Park District publishes a catalog prior to each season. It’s fantastic! It identifies all of the activities available through the district for the next season. For many Glenview residents this is a big day.

Our local park district is special. You can’t believe all of the things that it has to offer for kids and adults. In fact, there’s so much that the catalog is 96 pages long! You want sports? Well, take your pick…tennis, basketball, soccer, swimming, golf, ice skating, football, archery, fishing, wrestling, baseball, volleyball, gymnastics, Tae Kwon Do, karate, and lacrosse.

How about the arts? Drawing, painting, mixed media arts, ceramics, film, acting, dance, origami, calligraphy, floral design, guitar.

Health and fitness? Walking tracks, fitness club, swimming pools, yoga courses, exercise classes.

Science and technology? Computer classes, game design, robotics, and much more.

There are organized activities at Wagner Farm and the Grove Redfield Estate. The park district even has a wonderful pre-school.

Everything is organized by age groups, and as you can tell there’s something for everybody. Many of the sports, health, and fitness programs are right here in The Glen either in the Park Center or in Gallery Park. The Glen is much more than a place with great homes and shopping. It’s a lifestyle. And a big part of that lifestyle is the park district with its many activities and programs right here in our back yard.

“It’s a Wonderful Life”…at Tower Crossing in the Glen

May 19, 2014 by Margaret Ludemann

Every now and then as I walk from my Tower Crossing townhome to Glen Town Center (all of one short block away) I half expect to see Frank Capra and Jimmy Stewart, the director and star respectively of the Christmas classic, It’s a Wonderful Life. Why? Well, it’s obvious. Living here is indeed wonderful. In fact, it’s as good as it gets.

The Glen, as most of my readers know, is an upscale residential and retail community on Chicagoland’s North Shore in Glenview Illinois. It is composed of several distinct neighborhoods with single family homes, condos, apartments, townhomes, two-flats, villas, and duplexes. At the center of it all is Tower Drive, Glen Town Center’s main street with scores of shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues. It’s also home to an annual art festival, antique auto show, and weekly outdoor concerts in summertime.

Surrounding Glen Town Center – literally SURROUNDING these lovely boutiques and eateries – is the Tower Crossing development, 154 striking townhomes, every home within steps of all the fun. These breathtaking 4 story brick homes, depending on model, offer between 3031 sq ft and 4105 sq ft of luxury living. The Georgian architecture, professional landscaping, superb floor plans, hardwood floors, and top-of-the-line everything make these among the finest townhomes to be found anywhere in the country…yet they are right here in lovely Glenview…convenient to downtown Chicago’s cultural and sports venues, Ravinia, the Botanic Garden, and O’Hare Airport.

But there’s even more. Within a very short walk of every Tower Crossing home you’ll find Battery Park, Lake Glenview, Little Bear Garden, Glenview Park District’s pools and health club, walking trails, and two stunning golf courses.

Life in Tower Crossing is indeed wonderful, I think even better than Capra’s fictional Bedford Falls. If you are interested in living Tower Crossing’s “wonderful life” please contact me. Not only do I live here, but I am an award winning Realtor who sells many of its homes. Tower Crossing townhomes sell for between $650,000 and $850,000.

The Chapel in The Glen

November 4, 2013 by Margaret Ludemann

Back in the day…47 chapels were built on naval air stations throughout the United States.  These houses of worship were used for non-denominational services.  So over the course of the many years of their service, particularly during World War II, hundreds of thousands of naval airmen and base staff worshiped in these simple yet beautiful structures.

One is left.

The last remaining naval chapel resides in The Glen, the North Shore’s premier lifestyle community in Glenview, Illinois.  The Glen was built on the former Naval Air Station Glenview after the base was decommissioned and sold to the village.  It consists of over 2,000 homes, nearly 5,000 residents, scores of shops and restaurants, two golf courses, the Kohl Children’s Museum, Gallery Park, Lake Glenview, and numerous beautiful neighborhoods each built by a different developer.

The Glen’s chapel, now called Schram Memorial Chapel, was moved from its original location, and rebuilt at the corner of Patriot Blvd and Chestnut Drive; it is across the street from the highly regarded Attea Middle School.  It is the cornerstone of a housing development called – appropriately – Chapel Crossing which houses 676 residents living in 167 single family homes.

Today the chapel is available for rent for a variety of events.  It is particularly popular as a venue for weddings, but it is also used extensively for baptisms, christenings, memorial services, Eagle Court of Honor ceremonies, and Bar & Bat Mitzvahs.  The main chapel has pew seating for 150; and on the lower level there is auditorium-style seating for 140 or banquet-style seating for 90.  To make reservations or to gain additional information you can call the Glenview Park District at 847-521-2562.

There is a lot to love about The Glen.  For information about homes for sale, please contact Glen resident Margaret Ludemann who is a Realtor with @properties Residential Brokerage, 847-401-1802 or by email margaretludemann@gmail.com.
