New census of The Glen tell us a lot about the homes, neighborhoods and residents

October 13, 2014 by Margaret Ludemann

The new census for The Glen has just been completed, and it is interesting reading. For instance it tells us that there are 4,960 residents residing in 2,221 homes in the 13 development areas (read: neighborhoods), as of August, 2014. Of these nearly 5,000 residents, 1,367 are children.

Each year the Village of Glenview (in Illinois) has this census done to calculate payments to various jurisdictions which provide services to Glen residents. So, for instance, the more children in schools means that the village owes more money to local school districts. Let’s dig a little deeper into the census results.

The 13 development areas include 9 with privately owned homes or rented single and multi-family homes. The other 4 include Navy housing and 3 senior housing communities. Navy? Yes, indeed. The Glen resides on the grounds of the former Naval Air Station Glenview; and there remain 112 housing units for Navy personnel of which there are 213 adults and 80 children.

In the 9 communities with privately owned and rental homes, there are 3,921 residents of which 1,287 (33%) are children.   Here is a breakdown by neighborhood:

Chapel Crossing: 167 homes, 368 adults, 277 children

Landings (Concord): 143 homes, 324 adults, 250 children

Southgate: 299 homes, 626 adults, 413 children

Cambridge: 244 homes, 481 adults, 200 children

Tower Crossing: 154 townhomes, 306 adults, 68 children

Patriot Commons: 68 homes, 122 adults, 23 children

Regency: 146 homes, 179 adults, 43 children

Aloft: 181 apartments, 185 adults, 10 children

Glenshore: 31 homes, 43 adults, 3 children

Of the 1,287 children in The Glen, 1,175 are of school age. 82% attend public schools. 18% attend private schools. This last number is particularly interesting because in most suburban communities the percentage of children in private schools averages between 4% and 8%. This variance is likely due to the economic standing of Glen residents. In other words, it is a development comprised largely of affluent families who can afford private education.

There is a lot of additional information in this year’s census, and I will include more of it in future blogs.

Kids in The Glen & Where They Go To School

July 15, 2013 by Margaret Ludemann

Hard to believe, but schools open here in Glenview, Illinois in just over a month.  Getting my son ready for 7th grade is on my mind, and I thought I would share with you what I know about kids in the Glen and their schools.

Before I get into the numbers, I should tell you that the public schools attended by children in the Glen are considered top notch.  Westbrook and Glen Grove are the elementary schools, Attea is the middle school (located in the Glen), and Glenbrook South is the high school.  This is what pointed my husband and me to the Glen a decade ago.  Here is some evidence:  In the recent national debating championships in Atlanta, the two finalist high schools (from all across the country) were Glenbrook South and Glenbrook North (about one mile away.)

OK, the numbers, according to the annual census of the Glen 2012:

  • There are 4,068 residents in the Glen who do not live in senior housing; and 1420 are children (35%).
  • 1,158 are enrolled in school.  262 children are not yet of school age.
  • 948 are in public schools (81.9% of school age children)
  • 210 are in non-public schools (18.1%).  Glen students in non-public schools attend one of 27 schools, most of these are enrolled in 3 Catholic schools: OLPH (Our Lady of Perpetual Help), Loyola Academy, and Saint Catherine.

By neighborhood (except for Regency which was too new for the census), here are the numbers homes followed by the numbers of Glen children:

Southgate, 299 homes, 405 children

Chapel Crossing, 167 homes, 307 children

Landings, 143 homes, 269 children

Cambridge, 244 homes, 223 children

Navy housing, 112 homes, 108 children

Tower Crossing, 154 homes, 73 children

Patriot Commons, 68 homes, 24 children

Aloft apartments, 181 homes, 11 children

Glenshore, 31 homes, 0 children

The Glen is a special place for adults and children alike.  If you would like more information about the Glen, please contact me at 847-401-3325 or margaretludemann@gmail.com.

Living near The Glen Club, Glenview Illinois

February 21, 2013 by Margaret Ludemann

Spring is just around the corner, and it’s time to be thinking about golf!  One of the great benefits of living in The Glen is proximity to The Glen Club’s 18 home championship golf course designed by Tom Fazio.  The course is open to the public, and it also offers memberships.

The Glen Club opened in 2001 to rave reviews.  It is the only golf course in the country that was named in all three of the Top 10 New Course lists (Golf Digest, Golf Magazine and Sports Illustrated). More accolades followed including the Zaget Survey which put the club on its list of America’s Top 50 Golf Courses (2003 – 05); and Great Lakes Golf Magazine named it the best golf course in Illinois.  The club has been host to numerous Nationwide Tour tournaments; and it is the permanent home of the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame.

The Glen Club is located in The Glen within walking distance of nearly every home.  55 homes in the Southgate On the Glen development and 8 Tower Crossing townhomes border the course, and several other homes in these developments have course views.  In addition to these neighborhoods, homeowners in Regency in The Glen and Cambridge at The Glen are particularly close to the clubhouse.

The Glen is unique and wonderful in so many ways.  Homeowners’ proximity to one of the country’s premier golf courses is one of them.  The Glen Club is located at 2901 West Lake Avenue in Glenview, Illinois.  You may reach the club by phone at 847-724-7272.  If you will be visiting from out of town, the club offers elegant hotel rooms in the clubhouse.

The Glen Census: Neighborhoods, Residents, Children

February 8, 2013 by Margaret Ludemann

Often I receive phone calls or emails from people who live outside of the Chicago metropolitan area who have heard of The Glen or who discovered it while performing real estate searches.  Many found individual homes online, but wonder what the neighborhood is like…and if it’s family/children friendly.  Well, here is some of what I tell them…

“The Glen – By the Numbers.”

NEIGHBORHOODS:  The Glen is not just one neighborhood.  In fact, we have 13 defined residential areas.  They can be classified into three different types of housing:

(1) Privately owned or rented single and multi-family units: Chapel Crossing at The Glen, Landings at The Glen, Cambridge at The Glen, Southgate on The Glen, Patriot Commons at The Glen, Regency at The Glen, Aloft at The Glen Tower Center, Tower Crossing at The Glen and Glenshore Condos;

(2) Senior housing: Vi at The Glen, Chestnut Square at The Glen and Thomas Place; and

(3) Navy town homes (The Glen is located on the land formerly used as Naval Air Station Glenview, and there continues to be some Navy housing.)

HOMES, POPULATION & CHILDREN:  There are 2,075 homes and 4,843 residents in The Glen.  For the record, I haven’t met one who doesn’t love it here.  Of those nearly 5,000 residents are 1,420 children.

  • 1,119 of the children are old enough to attend school.
  • Of these, 210 attend non-public schools (about 18%).
  • 948 children attend the several excellent public schools in Glenview.

The numbers, of course, only tell you a part of the story.  To learn about our homes, shopping, dining, golfing, and lifestyle, please give me a call at 847-401-1802.
