Glenbrook South High School receives a prestigious award…again!

The public high school serving students living in The Glen and greater Glenview is award-winning Glenbrook South High School.  Over the years it has received many awards for its excellence in educating area students from grades 9 through 12.  In fact, only two years ago software company Niche, using data from the U.S. Department of Education, analyzed and compared American high schools and named GBS the 30th best public high school in the country and the #1 high school for extracurricular activities.

Recently, GBS received yet another award.  It has been named a Project Lead The Way Distinguished School.  The award recognizes its successful efforts to increase student access, engagement, and achievement in its computer science, biomedical science and engineering program.  This is the second consecutive year that GBS has been recognized for this achievement.

As a Glen homeowner and parent of a GBS senior, I am very proud of our local high school.  In fact, the quality of area schools is the very reason why my family chose to move to The Glen 16 years ago.  The Glen is the upscale retail and housing development on the grounds of the former Naval Air Station Glenview.  We have beautiful homes of every kind with home prices ranging from the $300’s to over $2 million.  If your family has children, you should consider living here, too.  I am an award-winning local Realtor, and I would love to show you around.

Big award for The Glen

To the many attributes of The Glen add this: The project that created The Glen has just been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its first-ever National Federal Facility Excellence in Site Reuse Award. Sure, it’s a long and confusing name, but the award is meaningful and important. Read on.

The Glen is a residential and commercial development in Glenview, Illinois on the grounds of the former Naval Air Station Glenview. It is comprised of over 2000 homes of all varieties including single family homes, townhomes, row homes, duplexes and condos. The Glen is also home to Glen Town Center which contains a multitude of wonderful restaurants, shops and a movie theater.

As I said, The Glen started as a naval air base. It was closed in 1993. The EPA partnered with the Village of Glenview to clean up the site and turn it over to the Village for development. The project was known as The Glen: From Runways to Streetscapes. Work on construction began in 1997, and it is largely complete. The first Glen homeowners took possession of their homes in 2001. The most recent, and perhaps last, housing development was completed last year; it’s known as Westgate at the Glen. It is one of several unique Glen neighborhoods including Southgate, Tower Crossing, Regency, Cambridge, Chapel Crossing, Glen Shore, Landings and Patriot Commons.

So, there is one more reason for those fortunate homeowners in The Glen to be proud…we are an award winning community. One that we admire and love.

High school serving The Glen is in the top 0.001% in USA

Glenbrook South High School (GBS) is the public high school serving kids in The Glen and greater Glenview.  The Glen is the upscale retail and housing development on the grounds of the former Naval Air Station Glenview.  Over 1300 children of all ages live in The Glen, and 379 attend GBS.

GBS was recently ranked as one of the top high schools in the country!  Niche is a Pittsburgh based company whose analytics identify and rank schools and neighborhoods.  Information is gathered to determine school rankings by compiling data which is collected and monitored by the U.S. Department of Education.  GBS ranked #30 of the more than 26,000 public high schools in the country.  My calculator tells me that this equates to the top 0.001%.  Lotta zeros there!  And it was just last year that Niche ranked GBS as the #1 high school in America for extracurricular activities which include clubs, organizations, music groups and athletic teams.

I’m fortunate that my son is a GBS Titan.  He’s getting an excellent education, and takes part in numerous activities.  I’m proud of him.  I’m proud of GBS.  And I’m proud to live in The Glen.

How The Glen Came to Be

The Glen is a wonderful place to live, shop and dine. It’s located on the grounds of the former Naval Air Station Glenview which operated here for a long time. We have over 2000 luxury homes, over 20 shops and boutiques, 17 restaurants and much more. But how did it come about? Well, here is the timeline:

1993:   The Navy announces that the air base will close.

1995:   A Consensus reuse plan is approved.

1996:   The Navy Department approves the transfer of the property to the Village of Glenview.

1997:   A Master Plan is completed including luxury housing, retail and commercial development along with a school, a lake, parks, and other open spaces.

1999:   The first parcel of land is sold. Shortly thereafter, residential construction begins on detached single family homes, townhomes, row homes, duplexes, two-flats and condos.

2003:   Glen Town Center (our “downtown”) opens.

2014:   The last parcel of land is sold.

2017:   The last “new construction” neighborhood is completed.

The end result is more than 2500 residential and senior units, 1 million square feet of retail, 1 million square feet of office and light industrial, and 400 acres of open space including two golf courses…The Glen Club and Glenview Prairie Club.

The Glen…by the numbers

The Annual Census for The Glen (in Glenview, Illinois) has just been released, and it has interesting information about the population of this community. I will delve into many of the details, particularly as it relates to children and schools, in future blogs; but in this one I will share with you some of the basics. As detective Joe Friday (actor Jack Webb) used to say on the old Dragnet TV show, “Just the facts, mam, just give me the facts.”

In 1993 the Naval Air Station Glenview closed. Five years later it was acquired by the Village of Glenview which subsequently developed it into The Glen, a high end residential and retail community. Several neighborhoods were developed by various builders, and over time a large number of luxury homes were built and the population grew.

According to the new census report for the year ending June 30, 2016, there are 2,452 homes in The Glen of which 2,250 are occupied. These numbers include not only private residences (single family homes, townhomes, row houses, duplexes, two-flats, condos and rental apartments), but also the three senior living communities. There are 3,128 adults in private homes, 765 in senior housing, and 213 in the small area that still contains Navy personnel. This brings the total number of adults to 4,106.

There are also 1,398 children (birth through high school) living in The Glen, the vast majority in private homes. The total number of residents in The Glen, therefore, is 5,504. This is an increase of 305 people over the previous year, much of that increase due to the development of a new Glen neighborhood, Westgate at The Glen.
