17 restaurants in Glen Town Center

He couldn’t believe it.  Really, he couldn’t.

My family is hosting a Japanese exchange student for the next eight days.  He will be attending Glenbrook South, the incredible high school serving Glenview.  We picked him up yesterday and drove him to our home in The Glen, the North Shore’s premier lifestyle community.

After getting him settled in my husband, son and I took him out to dinner.  Of course he doesn’t know the restaurants in the area so we walked him down Tower Drive which is the main restaurant and shopping area in Glen Town Center.  There are 17 restaurants in this two block area, so he had quite a selection to choose from.  I’m not making that up.  It’s a half block from my front door to Tower Drive, and by walking for 5 minutes he had a choice of restaurants serving Italian, Greek, Irish, Thai, Japanese, Mexican and traditional American fare.  He couldn’t believe the number of restaurants and the variety of food all within a brief stroll.  I couldn’t understand what he was saying, but I could tell that he was amazed.

“Sato” chose Yardhouse, a great place with a large menu.  We thought he might choose Ra Sushi Bar & Restaurant, but he was in the mood for an American hamburger.  When his meal was served his eyes got really big because of the size of his burger.  He even took a picture of it to send back home.

After dinner we drove him around The Glen, and he got to see our many luxury homes…single family homes, townhomes, row homes, duplexes, two-flats.  These wonderful homes along with the upscale shopping and terrific Glen restaurants are what set The Glen apart.

Variety of health care providers in The Glen

My blogs about The Glen development (in Glenview, Illinois) typically focus on the luxury homes to be found here. Sometimes I write about the restaurants and shops in Glen Town Center. I’ve also mentioned the park, lake, golf courses and Kohl Children’s Museum. Today, though, I want to tell you about another great reason to live in The Glen.

This community is all about having everything within a short walk. Entertainment, shopping, even the train station that gets you to downtown Chicago in about 40 minutes. Well, you can also walk to your health care providers…your dentist, your doctors, and even a medical clinic. Alternatively you can drive to them from any of the 1300 homes in The Glen…in about a minute or two.

My primary care physician is 5 blocks from my home. Five blocks! There are also many specialists located here…cardiologists, dermatologists, gynecologists, oncologists, and more. My son has gone to the same local pediatrician for the 13+ years that we’ve lived in The Glen. And our dentist…we love Dr. Suh!! As I mentioned above, we also have a full function clinic, the Northwestern Medicine Outpatient Center. It offers primary, specialty and immediate care…just walk in, no appointment needed. It’s open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week.

The Glen in Glenview Illinois is a housing and retail development with a large variety of home types and prices. I’ve lived here since 2003, and I focus my real estate practice largely in this wonderful community. Part of the lure of The Glen is its convenience to downtown Chicago, barely 40 minutes by train from our local Metra station, an easy walk from any of our homes. Another great benefit is Glen Town Center with scores of restaurants and shops. But this blog isn’t about transportation or shopping. Instead, I want to tell you about our homes.

We have over a thousand luxury homes in The Glen including single family homes, row homes, townhomes, duplexes, two-flats and condos. Their sizes range between about 1,200 to 5,000 square feet. So it’s a great place to live for an individual or for large families. There are ten distinct Glen neighborhoods, each with different housing styles. There are colonial, contemporary, Georgian, and many other architectural designs. The common elements in all are luxury and beauty.

There is also great variety in home prices. Condos and townhomes start in the $300’s. Single family homes start in the $700’s, and those on The Glen Club’s championship golf course can be over $2 million. There is even some new construction still available.

The Glen. New Urbanism. Huh?

The Glen in Glenview Illinois is a perfect example of a community design concept called New Urbanism which emphasizes walkable neighborhoods that reduce a dependence on cars and one that promotes a strong sense of community.  Rather than the seemingly endless developments of single family homes with no commercial core, new urbanism envisions a retail center around which various neighborhoods are built with a variety of home styles.

Suburban sprawl came about with the rise of cars in the first half of the 20th century.  Autos allowed people to live away from the city.  To go to the city or – later – to shopping malls that sprang up in the 60’s and 70’s, people got in their cars and drove.  They may have lived in specific neighborhoods, but they had little in the way of identity and emotional attachment to these areas.

New Urbanism also emphasizes plenty of open spaces and community institutions to be shared by residents and easily accessible by walking or riding bikes.  Mass transit typically is provided for distances that might typically be reached by automobiles, thus New Urbanism is considered environmentally friendly.

The Glen has a retail core called Glen Town Center with tons of shops, restaurants and a movie theater.  This three block area is located on Tower Drive that my family refers to as “Main Street”.  Within The Glen one also finds playgrounds, two golf courses, tennis courts, sports fields, Battery Park, Lake Glenview, Kohl Children’s Museum, and the Glenview Park Center with a health club, basketball courts, and a pre-school.  Residents from any of the various Glen neighborhoods can walk to any of these venues.

There are many housing types in The Glen including single family homes, condos, townhomes, row homes, duplexes and two-flats.  These homes offer an abundance of architectural styles to please most any taste.  We also have our own Metra train station for residents who need to reach the city for work or who want to take advantage of Chicago’s many cultural and sports offerings.

The Holidays in The Glen

The Glen during the holidays is magical, especially in Glen Town Center, our retail hub with upscale restaurants and shopping galore.  You’ll quickly notice the colorful lighting and the shops filled with seasonal gifts you can’t find anywhere else.  And there are special events for the kids, two of which I’ll highlight below.

The Glen in Glenview Illinois is a development with luxury homes of all kinds.  You’ll find single family homes, row homes, townhomes, condos, apartments, two-flats and duplexes.  Home prices range from the $300s to over $2 million dollars.

OK, now for the special events for the kids.  The Book Market (a great bookstore!) will host Santa’s Craft Corner on December 17 and a terrific puppet show, The Shoemaker and the Elves, from 11am to 11:45am on December 28.  You’ll need to register online at http://www.theglentowncenter.com/events soon.  The Book Market is located at 2651 Navy Boulevard in the heart of Glen Town Center.
