How The Glen Came to Be

June 27, 2017 by Margaret Ludemann

The Glen is a wonderful place to live, shop and dine. It’s located on the grounds of the former Naval Air Station Glenview which operated here for a long time. We have over 2000 luxury homes, over 20 shops and boutiques, 17 restaurants and much more. But how did it come about? Well, here is the timeline:

1993:   The Navy announces that the air base will close.

1995:   A Consensus reuse plan is approved.

1996:   The Navy Department approves the transfer of the property to the Village of Glenview.

1997:   A Master Plan is completed including luxury housing, retail and commercial development along with a school, a lake, parks, and other open spaces.

1999:   The first parcel of land is sold. Shortly thereafter, residential construction begins on detached single family homes, townhomes, row homes, duplexes, two-flats and condos.

2003:   Glen Town Center (our “downtown”) opens.

2014:   The last parcel of land is sold.

2017:   The last “new construction” neighborhood is completed.

The end result is more than 2500 residential and senior units, 1 million square feet of retail, 1 million square feet of office and light industrial, and 400 acres of open space including two golf courses…The Glen Club and Glenview Prairie Club.

If you’re interested in urban living in the suburbs, please contact me about The Glen. I am a Glen homeowner and an award winning Realtor focusing on Glen home sales.

Check out the great schools serving The Glen

April 11, 2017 by Margaret Ludemann

Kids in The Glen (in Glenview, Illinois) are very fortunate for a lot of reasons. Chief among them are the outstanding schools serving our area. Parents who are considering moving to The Glen may want to check them out carefully as my husband and I did nearly 14 years ago. School quality was one of the most important reasons why we chose to live here. And we haven’t been disappointed.

So, here is the list of schools along with their websites so that you can do your own investigation. I know you will be as impressed as my family has been.

Glenview School District 34 covers grades K through 8. The district website is http://www.glenview34.org/

Within District 34 there are three schools serving Glen children, as follows:

For grades K through 2, Glen students attend Westbrook Elementary School. https://wb.glenview34.org/

For grades 3 through 5, Glen students attend Glen Grove Elementary School.  https://gg.glenview34.org/

For grades 6 though 8, Glen students attend Attea Middle School. http://at.glenview34.org

High school students attend the award winning Glenbrook South High School in Glenbrook School District 225. The district’s website is https://www.glenbrook225.org/   The school’s website is https://www.glenbrook225.org/gbs/home

For smaller children there is a wonderful pre-school in the Glenview Park Center which is located in the heart of The Glen. Here is the website: http://www.glenviewparks.org/facilities-parks/park-center-preschool/

I am a long time Glen homeowner and an award winning Realtor focused on selling homes in The Glen. If you may be interested in living in The Glen, please contact me at margaret.ludemann@gmail.com or 847-401-1802.

Cambridge at The Glen offers a large variety of home types

March 13, 2017 by Margaret Ludemann

The Glen in Glenview Illinois is an upscale residential and retail development on the grounds of a former Navy air station. It is composed of several neighborhoods, each with its own particular character. Cambridge at the Glen is unique among the Glen neighborhoods because it has the greatest variety of home types.

There are 279 homes in the Cambridge development which consists of single family homes, duplexes, townhomes, row homes and two-flats. Most of the other neighborhoods have only one or perhaps two home types. Here is a breakdown of the number of luxury homes by type in Cambridge:

  • 108 townhomes and row homes
  • 104 traditional single family homes
  • 19 estate-style single family homes
  • 35 duplexes
  • 13 two-flats

All homes in Cambridge are within walking distance of Glen Town Center’s many shops and restaurants. You can also walk to Gallery Park, two golf courses, and Kohl Children’s Museum. Cambridge is also the closest of the Glen neighborhoods to The Glen’s Metra Station that can get you to downtown Chicago in 31 to 44 minutes depending on time of day.

Home prices in Cambridge range from the $400’s to over a million dollars. There is also great diversity in the sizes of these homes, from less than 2,000 square feet to more than 4,000 square feet. The large estate homes and striking townhomes grace a grand boulevard in the center of Cambridge, while charming Rockwellian “front porch Americana” homes adorn smaller side streets with names like Butterfly Lane and Sundrop Drive.  Tasteful landscaping enhances the beauty of the Cambridge neighborhood and of each home.

If you may be interested in living in The Glen, please contact me. I have been a Glen homeowner since 2003; and I am an award-winning north shore Realtor focusing on The Glen.

The Glen. New Urbanism. Huh?

December 19, 2016 by Margaret Ludemann

The Glen in Glenview Illinois is a perfect example of a community design concept called New Urbanism which emphasizes walkable neighborhoods that reduce a dependence on cars and one that promotes a strong sense of community.  Rather than the seemingly endless developments of single family homes with no commercial core, new urbanism envisions a retail center around which various neighborhoods are built with a variety of home styles.

Suburban sprawl came about with the rise of cars in the first half of the 20th century.  Autos allowed people to live away from the city.  To go to the city or – later – to shopping malls that sprang up in the 60’s and 70’s, people got in their cars and drove.  They may have lived in specific neighborhoods, but they had little in the way of identity and emotional attachment to these areas.

New Urbanism also emphasizes plenty of open spaces and community institutions to be shared by residents and easily accessible by walking or riding bikes.  Mass transit typically is provided for distances that might typically be reached by automobiles, thus New Urbanism is considered environmentally friendly.

The Glen has a retail core called Glen Town Center with tons of shops, restaurants and a movie theater.  This three block area is located on Tower Drive that my family refers to as “Main Street”.  Within The Glen one also finds playgrounds, two golf courses, tennis courts, sports fields, Battery Park, Lake Glenview, Kohl Children’s Museum, and the Glenview Park Center with a health club, basketball courts, and a pre-school.  Residents from any of the various Glen neighborhoods can walk to any of these venues.

There are many housing types in The Glen including single family homes, condos, townhomes, row homes, duplexes and two-flats.  These homes offer an abundance of architectural styles to please most any taste.  We also have our own Metra train station for residents who need to reach the city for work or who want to take advantage of Chicago’s many cultural and sports offerings.

If The Glen sounds like kind of place where you would like to live, please contact me.  I am a long time Glen homeowner and an award winning Realtor.  I can be reached by phone at 847-401-1802 or by email at margaretludemann@gmail.com.

The Holidays in The Glen

December 12, 2016 by Margaret Ludemann

The Glen during the holidays is magical, especially in Glen Town Center, our retail hub with upscale restaurants and shopping galore.  You’ll quickly notice the colorful lighting and the shops filled with seasonal gifts you can’t find anywhere else.  And there are special events for the kids, two of which I’ll highlight below.

The Glen in Glenview Illinois is a development with luxury homes of all kinds.  You’ll find single family homes, row homes, townhomes, condos, apartments, two-flats and duplexes.  Home prices range from the $300s to over $2 million dollars.

OK, now for the special events for the kids.  The Book Market (a great bookstore!) will host Santa’s Craft Corner on December 17 and a terrific puppet show, The Shoemaker and the Elves, from 11am to 11:45am on December 28.  You’ll need to register online at http://www.theglentowncenter.com/events soon.  The Book Market is located at 2651 Navy Boulevard in the heart of Glen Town Center.

If you may be interested in living in The Glen, please give me a call.  I’m a long time Glen homeowner and an award winning Realtor.
